Knowshon Moreno’s Pro Day… Not So Good?

Knowshon Moreno, who could be the first running back taken in the draft, attracted much attention while posting times of 4.60 and 4.63 in the 40-yard dash. “This atmosphere is not really as stressful as the combine,” Moreno said. “It was good to get here and be with your teammates. It’s more relaxed, but it’s still a work day.” I still think a lot of scouts and coaches are going to be turned off by his slow 40-times. You have to go back to 2000 to find a back chosen in the first round who ran slower than Moreno.

He’s not letting it get to him though. “It’s whatever they want,” Moreno said. “You definitely get a lot out of the running back drills and things like that… But all my stuff is really on tape. They can see what I can do.”

I’m a bit worried. Will team’s ignore the stopwatch and take a chance on him in the first round? If he slides into round 2, I could definitely see the Jaguars taking him near the top since they just got rid of Fred Taylor. Moreno would be a nice compliment for Maurice Jones-Drew.

ok, here’s a question. if you ranked all the running backs in the nfl by 40 times, what would be the correspondence between speed and performance? is there really such a strong connection between “hard to tackle” and open field speed? obviously, knowshon at 4.4 is better than knowshon at 4.6, but i have a feeling that he’ll be a much better back than a lot of guys who run the 40 faster than he does.

knowshon sliding into round 2 wouldn’t be so bad (not that i think it’ll happen). say the lions pick stafford first, & then get knowshon on the next go-around? suddenly i’d have a new favorite team.
