The Denver Broncos were without first round draft pick Knowshon Moreno in their second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Knowshon is being held out because of an MCL Sprain. If the Broncos are lucky, they may have him back for the final preseason game.

Knowshon Moreno was drafted to be a starting, 3-down back from the get go. If he can’t get healthy though, he won’t be starting opening day and will lose carries to some of the vets like LaMont Jordan and Correll Buckhalter.

Backfield minus Moreno, Jordan against Bears
The Denver Post

Rookie tailback Knowshon Moreno’s recovery from a sprained medial collateral ligament is stretching well into its second week.

Moreno has not returned to practice since he was injured in the first quarter of the team’s first preseason game Aug. 14 at San Francisco.

There is a chance Moreno will be able to return to practice next week, though it is unlikely he will be ready to play in the final preseason game, Sept. 3 against Arizona.

The team then has nine days to prepare for the Sept. 13 season opener at Cincinnati, when Moreno should be available.

“I don’t want to put a date on it, but I think he’s doing everything he can every day to be back on the field as soon as possible,” Broncos coach Josh McDaniels

said. “I think everything is going as planned, and hopefully that will be sooner rather than later.”
The Broncos backfield will be short-handed Sunday against Chicago without Moreno and LaMont Jordan, who has missed every practice this week.

Correll Buckhalter, who started against the Seahawks last week, will again get most of the repetitions with the starters, but McDaniels said he expects the remaining healthy backs — Peyton Hillis, Darius Walker and Marcus Thomas — to play too.

“Whoever is healthy and ready to go, they’re all going to play,” McDaniels said. “We don’t have enough depth right now at that spot to just say we’re going to hold these two till the next week.”

Knowshon sighting
by Mike Klis on August 30, 2009

Under the watchful eye of Broncos’ longtime trainer Steve “Greek”” Antonopulos, Broncos rookie running back Knowshon Moreno was testing his injured right knee prior to the preseason game here tonight against the Bears at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Moreno, the Broncos’ No. 12 overall draft pick, suffered a strained MCL in his right knee while making his second carry in the preseason opener Aug. 14 at San Francisco.

At Invesco tonight, Moreno was attached to a bungee cord that was secured around the base of the goal post near the south end zone. Working against the bungee resistence, Moreno went through a series of backpedals, crossovers and lateral moves.

There’s a chance Moreno could practice this week on a limited basis with hopes he will be ready to play by the Broncos’ regular-season opener Sept. 13 at Cincinnati.

from yahoo sports, broncos team report:

Battle Of The Week: RBs Correll Buckhalter(notes) vs. LaMont Jordan(notes). Rookie Knowshon Moreno(notes), who missed Denver’s second preseason game with a knee injury, looms over this battle because he’ll be a factor when he comes back. Buckhalter and Jordan have had a chance to open up a lead over Moreno but haven’t been spectacular in either preseason game. Buckhalter started his second consecutive preseason game and had 15 yards on four carries and had one catch. Jordan had nine yards on four carries, and also added a pair of catches. Buckhalter can attack the perimeter, especially as a receiver out of the backfield, and Jordan supplies power, so both could end up bringing different things to the offense, although Moreno will likely slide into a big role when he returns.
